Welcome to Visit Kilpisjärvi Guided Winter Experiences! We are a family business in the arctic village of Kilpisjärvi in Finnish Lapland and invite you to experience our home region with us on our guided “Safaris & Tours in Kilpisjärvi”.

The following activities have scheduled departures, which are carried out when at least 2 persons have made a booking. We take no more than 12 persons at a time to participate in these activities:

  • Border Safari to the Three-Country Cairn of Finland, Norway and Sweden
  • The Arctic Evening Experience
  • Snowshoe Trek in the Borderland
  • The Tundra Experience

Yet, if you wish to book any of these tours privately or if you are traveling with a larger party, please feel free to contact us – we’ll be happy to organize a private experience for you for 1 – 30 persons.

While our tours have an age limit of 10 years,, we will be happy to recommend or customize a suitable private tour for your family if you are traveling with smaller children.

How to make a booking?

You will find a Book Now – button in each tour description. If, however, you do not find availability for the tour of your choice, please use the booking request form and we will be happy to check if we can accommodate you on an extra departure.

Traveling solo? Please send your booking request by filling in this form, because our web shop requires a minimum of 2 persons.

What about clothing for the activities?

It’s cold in Lapland in winter and you should be well prepared with proper warm and layered clothing! You can rent a set of protective clothing from us for the duration of booked outdoor activities. The set includes a snowsuit which is worn over your own layered clothing, boots, socks and mittens. The cost is € 15 / person / trip .

When you book a total of three excursions the outfit is provided without charge. The outfit is always included in the Private Snowmobile Safari to the Three-Country Cairn, The Tundra Experience, the Private Snowmobile Safari to the Wilderness and Conquering Mt. Halti.

We deliver the rental set to your accommodations in Kilpisjärvi and collect it after you have returned from your tour with us. Thus you do not need to leave the privacy of your accommodations to get outfitted for the experience. Safety helmets and a balaclava are at your disposal during the snowmobile transfers and they are always included in the price of the activity.

Border Safari to the Three-Country Cairn of Finland, Norway and Sweden

This excursion takes you to the Three Nations Border Point which is probably the most frequently visited sight in Kilpisjärvi. Its location marks the northernmost point of Sweden and the westernmost point of continental Finland and their meeting here with Norway.

Take a seat in the snowmobile passenger sled, sit back and relax while your guide expertly drives the snowmobile across the frozen Lake Kilpisjärvi towards the Norwegian and Swedish mountains. The landscape is magnificent! A couple of stops will be made on the way so that you can view the village of Kilpisjärvi from the lakeside, stretch your legs and admire the scenery.

Once you arrive at the Border Point you’ll experience what is likely to be the fastest three-country sightseeing tour in the world – by walking around the Three-Country Cairn.

Private Snowmobile Safari
to the Three-Country Cairn

If you want to experience the thrill of driving a snowmobile, the Border Safari is a perfect choice, also for beginners. A rental snowmobile will be at your disposal and the guide gives you driving and safety instructions before departure. The driving distance on Border Safari is approximately 30 km.

Snowmobile Safari to the Three-Country Cairn of Finland, Norway and Sweden

This excursion takes you to the Three Nations Border Point which is probably the most frequently visited sight in Kilpisjärvi. Its location marks the northernmost point of Sweden, the westernmost point of continental Finland and their meeting with Norway.

Before departure your guide gives you detailed safety and driving instructions. Then it’s time to take charge of your vehicle and follow the guide across the frozen Lake Kilpisjärvi towards the Swedish and Norwegian mountains. Two persons can share one snowmobile, taking turns in driving, or you can choose to drive solo.  

The landscape is magnificent!  A couple of stops will be made on the way so that you can view the village of Kilpisjärvi from the lakeside, stretch your legs and admire the scenery.  Once you arrive at the Border Point you’ll experience what is likely to be the fastest three-country sightseeing tour in the world – by walking around the Three-Country Cairn.

Please note that You need to be at least 18 years of age and in possession of a valid driver’s permit which entitles you to drive a car in Finland. A deposit for the rental snowmobile will be required.

  • Price: € 175 / person when 2 persons share one snowmobile and € 275 when driving solo, for a party of 2 – 4 persons
  • Price: € 325 if you are traveling alone and driving solo on a snowmobile
  • Price includes: Guiding, rental of snowmobile, fuel, hot beverage and protective clothing (snowsuit,, boots, socks, mittens), safety helmet and balaclava
  • Degree of difficulty: Easy to moderate, depending on weather conditions.

Please note: During the early stages of the snow season (December 1 – January 6) self-drive snowmobile safaris may not be available due to hazardous driving conditions caused by weather and in this case they are replaced with passenger sled transfer and the price difference will be credited to you.

Private Husky Sled Ride in Kilpisjärvi

Meet the Kilpisjärvi Husky Team! Siberian huskies are friendly and they just adore pulling a sled – that’s their hobby and that’s their work!

Siberian Husky Sled Ride in Kilpisjärvi, Lapland, Finland

You and your party can now learn how to be a ”musher”. Meet your guide Martti, the owner of the husky team, on the lake shore. Martti will teach you how to control the sled – and before you know it you’ll be off, “mushing” the husky team, heading towards the Swedish shore. The others in your party will follow you by snowmobile, seated comfortably in the sled while the guide drives. You’ll be on your own with the huskies, each person in your party taking his or her turn as the musher. A youngster can be seated in the husky sled while the parent drives.

At the turn-around point a break is taken and you’ll have a chance to get acquainted with each husky – they are so eager at the start that longer introductions may not have been possible. A hot berry juice is served during the break. The ride itself lasts approximately one hour, the total distance covered is nearly 10 km and 1 – 4 persons can be accommodated at a time.

Please note: During the height of the winter season (December 20 – January 6 and February 1 – March 21) advance bookings for Husky Sled Rides are confirmed primarily to customers who book a total of three experiences. The Arctic Evening Experience

Are you planning a trip to the Arctic in search of Northern Lights? If you wish to maximize your chances to view this mesmerizing natural phenomenon, also known as Aurora Borealis, you should consider spending a few days in Kilpisjärvi.

Statistically the village of Kilpisjärvi is a great choice – the northern lights appear here more frequently than anywhere else in Lapland. While staying in the village you may catch sight of Aurora Borealis without going far from your accommodations – a short walk takes you away from any light pollution. But if you want to venture out further and experience the arctic night in the nature, join our evening tour to the wilderness.

The tour starts with a snowmobile passenger sled transfer from the village center. You’ll be seated comfortably on cushions, wrapped in blankets, while your guide pilots the machine towards the darkness. At the destination, which is a basic wilderness camp, you spend the evening marveling at the sights and sounds of the arctic nighttime nature and anticipating ”Lady Aurora’s” mood. Will she dance tonight?

Hot beverages and a tasty snack will be served to you by your guide during the course of the evening.

Snowshoe Trek in the Borderland of Kilpisjärvi

Learn how to walk with snowshoes and enjoy fresh winter air and the tranquility of Lapland’s nature!

Our snowshoe excursion starts with a 10-minute snowmobile sled ride from the village to the starting point of the trek which takes place in the Salmivaara region, on the shore of Lake Kilpisjärvi.

On arrival the guide instructs you how to strap on a pair of snowshoes and equips you with poles. Once ready with the equipment you’re off, following the guide, uphill towards a vantage point, admiring the snow-covered nature while trekking at a comfortable pace. Regardless of weather conditions, a snowshoe trek is a delightful experience: from early winter and the soft colors of the polar night to the spring days which are filled with light. Snowfall or sunshine, a snowshoeing trip is an authentic rendez-vous with Lapland’s nature.

Stops will be made to explore animal tracks and to capture the scenery with your camera. Hot berry juice is served to quench your thirst at the turn-around point.

Private Village Tour: Catch a Glimpse of Local Life

The Village of Kilpisjärvi, with its 100 permanent residents, is Finland’s sole mountain village. at nearly 500 meters above the sea level. During the guided walk around the village you’ll learn about its development from birth to present day.

Nestling on the shore of a crystal-clear lake, in the lap of the highest peaks of Finland and the Scandinavian mountain range, the village with its surroundings offers breathtaking scenery and a calm oasis for all senses.

The lay of the land becomes familiar as you’ll admire the scenery dominated by the magnificent Mt. Saana and the sharp-edged mountains at the far end of the lake where the three countries, Norway, Finland and Sweden, meet at the world’s northernmost tripoint.

You’ll hear about the local Sámi population and about reindeer herding, what the village people do for a living and about their everyday life in this remote corner of the country.

The tour ends at the guide’s home for a cup of coffee and a photo trip through the eight seasons.

The Tundra Experience
in Käsivarsi Wilderness Region

The village of Kilpisjärvi is perched on the edge of the vast Käsivarsi Wilderness Region in northwestern Lapland. Getting to the wilderness is easiest and safest in the company of a professional guide. The panoramic vistas and the tranquility of this remote area create a unique experience.

There are no roads in the wilderness and motorized vehicles are limited to snowmobiles driven by locals and licenced guides. You’ll be comfortably seated in the guide’s snowmobile passenger sled, enjoying the ride and the views as he skillfully steers the vehicle towards the tundra.

Soon after leaving the village behind you ascend above the tree line. The trail leads you across amazing barren landscapes which seem to stretch into infinity. You might spot a reindeer herd on its winter pasture, a dog musher training his team or snowmobilers on a day’s outing.

During the trip you can try your hand at ice fishing – the guide provides the equipment and instruction, but if fishing is not your thing, just sit back, enjoy the exotic views and the peaceful atmosphere and take pictures. A picnic lunch is served to you in a wilderness shelter during the day’s outing.

Private Snowmobile Safari to the Wilderness Region: The Tundra Experience by Snowmobiles

Once you have previous snowmobile driving skills and wish to experience the Käsivarsi Wilderness Region on a private snowmobile tour, this is for you! Participating in our Snowmobile Safari to the Three-Country Border qualifies you for this adventure.

Private Excursion to Conquer Mt. Halti,
the Highest Summit of Finland

This is the dream of many visitors to Kilpisjärvi: to conquer the Top of Lapland! The snowmobile trail takes you across the highest tundra region in Finland, approximately 50 km each way. You’ll travel on frozen lakes, along river valleys, uphill and downhill in the ”fell country”, through total wilderness where there are no roads and no inhabitants.

Highest peak in Finland, Mt. Halti, Guided Tour, Kilpisjärvi, Lapland, Finland

The easiest way to reach the highest peak of Finland in winter is to travel there in the snowmobile passenger sled of an experienced guide. Take a seat, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride! Soon after leaving the village of Kilpisjärvi you’ll be above the tree line and on the tundra of the Käsivarsi Wilderness region. Stops will be made from time to time for viewing, admiring and photographing the spectacular scenery.

Mt. Halti – also known as Halti Fell – is situated on the Norwegian border and reaches to 1324 meters above sea level. If weather conditions are favorable we drive to the summit, and should it be clear, the steep cliffs of the Arctic Ocean shoreline may be seen. During the excursion a picnic lunch will be served to you by your guide in a wilderness hut.

Private Snowmobile Safari to Conquer Mt. Halti

You can choose to join the Conquering of Halti Fell by self-drive snowmobile, provided you have previous experience driving a snowmobile (driving on our Border Safari will qualify you for the Halti trip). The total driving distance is approximately 100 km.

Snowmobile Safari, Mt. Halti, Highest Peak in Finland, Kilpisjärvi, Lapland

You need to be at least 18 years of age and in possession of a driver’s licence which entitles you to drive a car in Finland. A deposit for the rental snowmobile will be required.

  • Price € 195 / person when 2 persons share 1 snowmobile and there are 4 – 8 persons in the party
