Let’s Go Catch Dinner! Fishing trip on Lake Kilpisjärvi

Lake Kilpisjärvi, the one and only alpine lake of its kind in all Finland, is surrounded by arctic landscapes of the three bordering countries, Finland, Sweden and Norway.   Visitors frequently ask us why the well-stocked super-market in our village sells no fresh fish.  Well, there is a good reason: the locals catch their own.

Let's Go Catch Dinner on a Fishing Trip with Martti the Guide

So if you want a dinner of fresh fish, get ready to catch it first! And don’t worry if you don’t know the first thing about fishing, because this is a perfect opportunity to learn the basics, in the company of a knowledgeable local guide (who always catches his own).

The excursion starts with a boat ride from the village shore.  Fishing with nets is the exclusive right of the residents, and here’s your chance to participate in this experience. The catch may be the treasured fish of the northern waters called ”arctic char”, it may be whitefish or grayling.  You’ll try your own luck with a hook and line – the guide will help you with each step – and have plenty of opportunity to admire the beautiful scenery. And are we going to catch something? More often than not there is a catch in the nets.  Yet, we can only guarantee the fishing, not the catch! A break on the shore crowns the trip, with an outdoor picnic around an open campfire.

  • Duration 3 hours
  • Season: Departures for 1 – 4 persons from June 22 to September 21
  • Cost € 120 / boat (1 – 4 persons) + € 20 / person
  • Price includes: guiding, boat ride, fishing equipment, picnic by open fire, floating device
  • Degree of difficulty: Easy
  • Meeting point within a 10-minute walk of the village center

Border River Safari: Rafting and Fishing on Könkämäeno, between Finland and Sweden

The River Könkämäeno, which starts in Lake Kilpisjärvi and forms the border between Finland & Sweden, is on the wish list of many seasoned fishermen. This trip is equally fun for those who are beginners and might experience their first ever catch of fish. During this rubber boat excursion you’ll admire the scenery of two countries: Finland on the left shore, Sweden on the right shore. You’ll experience the thrill of the rapids, most of them rather gentle and therefore suitable for even first-timers.

Rafting and Fishing on Border River Könkämäeno between Finland and Sweden Skipper Martti Niskanen.

The trip starts in Saarikoski, which is located 30 km south of Kilpisjärvi. The rafting route is ca. 10 km long, zigzagging between Finland and Sweden, passing several easy and a few a bit more difficult rapids en route. You’ll be comfortably seated in a rubber raft, paddling together with your licenced skipper guide. Grayling is the main catch you can expect if you participate in the fishing, which is by no means mandatory, as this trip is suitable for anyone with a love for the nature. A break will be held on the shore, with a picnic by open fire. If you plan to fish, you should bring your own equipment and obtain a fishing licence, which is not included in the cost.

  • Duration: 4 – 5 hours
  • Season: Departure for 1 – 4 persons from July 1 to August 31
  • Cost: € 240 / boat (1 – 4 persons) + € 20 / person
  • Price includes: guided fishing and rafting trip, picnic by campfire, floating device and rain clothing
  • Degree of difficulty: Easy to moderate, depending on weather conditions
  • Meeting point 30 km south of Kilpisjärvi

Avid fishermen might want to make this a full-day trip in which case the rafting distance will depend on how many fishing sites are visited and how much time is spent at each.

  • Duration: 8 hours
  • Season: Departures for 1 – 4 persons from July 1 to August 31
  • Cost: € 360 / boat (1 – 4 persons) + € 20 / person

Hiking in Arctic Nature in Finland and in Sweden

The Three-Country Cairn marks the point where Finland, Sweden and Norway meet, thus it’s an international tripoint, the northernmost in the world. It is also said to be the world’s most peaceful border – no border control, no guards, no customs lanes are anywhere to be seen.

The monument itself, a cone-shaped block of concrete, approximately 4 meters in diameter, was erected here in 1926, on an artificial island in a shallow lake. It is by no account an attractive sight in itself, but the surrounding nature and the majestic views make the trip an unforgettable experience.

The trip starts with a scenic half-hour boat ride across the lake which is surrounded by the mountaineous landscapes of the three countries. Upon landing at Koltaluokta Bay the hike starts and leads through the arctic nature in Sweden and in Finland towards the Cairn. Walking around the monument means visiting three countries and two time zones in the matter of ten seconds or less!

The length and duration of the hike will be modified according to your fitness level. At its shortest it is 6 km round trip from the boat pier, a longer trek will be around 10 km. A picnic snack will be served during the course of the day.

  • Duration 7 hours
  • Season: Departures for 2 – 6 persons from June 22 to September 21
  • Cost: € 105 / person for parties of 4 – 6 persons and € 135 / person for parties of 2 – 3 persons

  • Meeting point 5 km north of the village center

Full-day Hike in the Landscapes of Three Countries

Experience a hike in the landscapes of three countries: Finland, Norway and Sweden! Officially called Malla Strict Nature Reserve, this is one of Finland’s oldest protected nature areas. Named after the two Malla Fells which rise from the northern shore of Lake Kilpisjärvi the Malla Nature Reserve is a nature lover’s paradise, located in a unique year-round arctic environment and boasting rare plants produced by calciferous soil.

Hike in Malla Nature Reserve with Safaris-The Lapland Connection.

Access to visitors is limited to the 11-km long marked hiking trail which runs across the park from the Three-Country Cairn to a parking area located by the main road at the northern end of Kilpisjärvi village. You can start the hike on this trail at either end. Do note that there are no services along the trail, camping is not allowed, nor are bicycles and motorized vehicles. The only shelter is found near the Three-Country Cairn where a wilderness hut is at the hikers’ disposal free of charge. The trail features a few rocky ascents and descents as well as easy walk paths. During the flood season in early summer and in the fall crossing the many brooks en route may pose a challenge.

A hike through the Malla Nature Reserve offers magnificent vistas of Lake Kilpisjärvi, the Kitsi waterfall and the surrounding mountaineous arctic nature, as well as a glimpse into the local history and stories of life past and present in this remote corner of Finnish Lapland. It’s a perfect escape from everyday life for those searching for arctic beauty during a physically active day.

  • Duration 9 – 10 hours
  • Season: Departures for 2 – 6 persons from June 22 to September 21
  • Cost: € 130 / person for parties of 4 – 6 persons and € 180 / person for parties of 2 – 3 persons
  • Price includes: Guiding, boat ticket, outdoor snack (sandwich, fruit juice, pastry)
  • Degree of difficulty: Moderate to strenuous. You need to be able to hike a 15-km distance. The terrain features rather steep ascents and descents, rocky areas which can be slippery in rain, streams without bridges to be crossed. You need to be healthy with a good physical condition.
