HUSKY SLED RIDE

Meet the Kilpisjärvi Husky Team!  Siberian huskies are friendly and they just adore pulling a sled – that’s their hobby and that’s their work!

You and your party can now learn how to be a ”musher”. Meet your guide Martti, the owner of the husky team, on the lakeshore. Martti will teach you how to control the sled – and before you know it you’ll be off, heading towards the Swedish shore. The others in your party will follow you by snowmobile, seated comfortably in the sledge while the guide drives.  You’ll be on your own with the huskies, each person taking his or her turn as the musher. A youngster can be seated in the sledge while the parent drives.

At the turn-around point a break is taken and you’ll have a chance to get acquainted with each husky – they are so eager at the start that longer introductions may not have been possible. A hot berry juice is served during the break.  The trip lasts approximately one hour, the total distance covered is nearly 10 km and 1 – 4 persons can be accommodated at a time.

SEARCH FOR NORTHERN LIGHTS

Kilpisjärvi with its surroundings is a hotspot for viewing Aurora Borealis, the elusive and mesmerizing natural phenomenon that is on most Lapland travellers’ wish list.

While staying in Kilpisjärvi you may catch sight of Aurora Borealis without going far from your accommodations, but your chances are greater if you join a tour that takes you away from the man made lights.  Join us in the Search for Northern Lights and you’ll be transferred by snowmobile to the wilderness.  Sitting comfortably on cushions and wrapped in blankets in the snowmobile sledge while your guide pilots the machine towards the darkness you can marvel at the mysterious arctic night.  The trip takes you to an open lean-to or to a wilderness hut where the guide builds a fire and serves you hot beverages and a snack.

The open views from the vantage point, the distance from the village lights and the sheltered location give you a fine chance to view Lady Aurora if she should decide to give a performance.  Statistically you’re in the right place:  Kilpisjärvi boasts of more frequent and greater northern lights than any other place in Lapland.

Duration:  3 hours

Operation:  Departures for 2 – 8 persons during the snow season, from late November until end of March

Price:  € 55 / person

Price Includes:  Guiding, transportation, hot beverages and a snack (coffee, tea, berry juice, roasted sausage, pastry)

Degree of Difficulty:  Easy to moderate, depending on weather conditions

THE TUNDRA EXPERIENCE

The village of Kilpisjärvi is perched on the edge of the vast Käsivarsi Wilderness Area in northwestern Lapland.  Getting to the wilderness is easiest and safest in the company of a professional guide.  The panoramic vistas and the tranquility of this remote area create a unique experience.

There are no roads in the wilderness, and motorized vehicles are limited to snowmobiles driven by locals and licenced guides.  You’ll be comfortably seated in the guide’s snowmobile sledge, enjoying the ride and the views as he skillfully steers the vehicle towards the tundra.

Soon after leaving the village behind you ascend above the tree line.  The trail leads you across amazing barren landscapes which seem to stretch into infinity.  You might spot a reindeer herd on its winter pasture, a dog musher training his team or snowmobilers on a day’s outing.

During the trip you can try your hand at ice fishing – the guide provides the equipment and instruction, but if fishing is not your thing, just sit back , enjoy the exotic views and the peaceful atmosphere and take pictures.
