What about clothing for the summer & fall experiences

It can be quite chilly here in northern Lapland in summer and in autumn, and you should be well prepared with proper warm and layered clothing and sturdy water resistant footwear.

The average mean temperature in July – which is our warmest month – is around +11 C (52 F) and the in summertime the temperature can occasionally drop below zero Celsius (32 F) at night. The first snowfall normally takes place in September and while the snow does not stay on the ground until later in the fall, the daytime temperatures can be freezing.

Safety helmets and protective rainwear are at your disposal during the boating and rafting trips.

Let’s Go Catch Dinner!
Fishing Trip on Lake Kilpisjärvi

Lake Kilpisjärvi, the one and only alpine lake of its kind in all Finland, is surrounded by Arctic landscapes of the three bordering countries, Finland, Sweden and Norway.   Visitors frequently ask us why the well-stocked supermarket in our village sells no fresh fish.  Well, there is a good reason: the locals catch their own.

So if you want a dinner of fresh fish, get ready to catch it first! And don’t worry if you don’t know the first thing about fishing, because this is a perfect opportunity to learn the basics, in the company of a knowledgeable local guide (who always catches his own).

The excursion starts with a boat ride from the village shore.  Fishing with nets is the exclusive right of the residents, and here’s your chance to participate in this experience. The catch may be the treasured fish of the northern waters called ”arctic char”, it may be whitefish or grayling.  You’ll try your own luck with a hook and line – the guide will help you with each step – and have plenty of opportunity to admire the beautiful scenery. And are we going to catch something? More often than not there is a catch in the nets.  Yet, we can only guarantee the fishing, not the catch! A break on the shore crowns the trip, with an outdoor picnic around an open campfire.

The rafting route is about 10 km long, zigzagging between Finland and Sweden, passing several easy and a few a bit more challenging rapids en route. You’ll be comfortably seated in a rubber raft, paddling together with your licenced skipper guide. The stretches of still water will be crossed with the aid of the outboard engine. Rafting and Fishing on Könkämäeno,
the Border River between Finland and Sweden

The River Könkämäeno, which starts in Lake Kilpisjärvi and forms the border between Finland & Sweden, is on the wish list of many seasoned fishermen. This trip is equally fun for those who are beginners and might experience their first ever catch of fish.

Grayling is the main catch you can expect when fishing on River Könkämäeno. We’ll float down the river in a rubber raft, paddling through the rapids, crossing the quiet waters with the aid of the outboard engine and stopping from time to time in the best fishing spots to try our luck. A break will be held on the shore, with a picnic by open fire. The pace is set according to your wishes, thus the distance covered varies from five to fifteen kilometers.
